This page contains canonical Victorian texts on martial arts and physical culture sorted by Author. In order to find what you are looking for just hit ctrl F and search for the author or the art. If not included in the works title, the arts/weapons covered are listed in brackets after each text. Please note that some texts, for example Lang’s The Walking Stick Method of Self Defense are included despite the fact they were published after the end of Victorian era due to their direct relationship to the arts of the time, and their value to those studying them.
This section is purely for copies of historical books and articles, for modern training materials and reconstructed arts consult the antagonistics page. If a book is not available online, it will be listed with a link to the Amazon purchase page. If the book is not available at this time in any format, it will not appear here.
This is work in progress and texts will be added on a rather ad hoc basis. If you would like to submit a text, please use the contact form.
